Comedian Romesh Ranganathan Sparks Fury Over Royal Pay Rise Remark
Romesh Ranganathan Royal Pay Rise Remark Sparks Fury

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan has triggered a massive backlash after claiming the Royal family deserves a pay rise during a preview of TLC's new comedy show Unacceptable.

Controversial Statement on New Show

The eyebrow-raising statement was made in a sneak peek of the six-episode series, hosted by award-winning stand-up Ed Gamble. The show pits comedians against each other as they attempt to win over a studio audience with outrageous views. The crowd votes twice on each opinion — before and after hearing arguments — with a live swingometer tracking how many punters the comics persuade.

Joining Ed are comedy heavyweights and team captains Richard Ayoade and Joanne McNally, each accompanied by two guest comics who unveil one bonkers opinion apiece. The entire squad hears these opinions for the first time and must rally behind them.

Guest Comedians and Romesh's Controversy

The trio bring a stellar roster of guest comedians, including Maisie Adam, Guz Khan, Joel Dommett, Katherine Ryan, Tom Davis, and executive producer Romesh Ranganathan. In the teaser, host Ed announces, "Right, it's time to deep dive into our guests' minds and unearth their most horrific opinion. Joanne, who's stepping up from your team?"

The camera pans to Joanne, who says, "It is King Ram." Ed interjects: "It's Romesh Ranganathan. In a moment, Romesh, you'll reveal your opinion. And remember, the audience is already on your side, and we will put it to a vote." Romesh quips, "I cannot see this going well." Ed presses: "OK, Romesh, if you're ready, please confess your deeply unacceptable opinion."

The crowd jeers as Romesh declares, "My unacceptable opinion is that we should pay the Royals more." A staggering 92% of the audience deems his view unacceptable. Viewers will need to tune in to hear Romesh defend his controversial stance.

Other Outrageous Opinions

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the programme, Katherine Ryan believes all men should have vasectomies at birth, Ivo Graham attempts to convince everyone that private school kids need state support, and Maisie Adam thinks we should let AI run the world, amongst other eyebrow-raising takes.

Unacceptable will air from Sunday, July 5 at 9pm.
