Alwen Hughes, the wife of disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris, remained loyal to her husband throughout his trial and imprisonment for child sex offences. She died in summer 2024 at the age of 92, just over a year after Harris' death in May 2023.
Early Life and Marriage
Alwen Hughes was a Welsh sculptress and jeweller. She met Rolf Harris while they were both students at the University of Western Australia. The couple married in March 1958 and had a daughter, Bindi, in 1964. Hughes was known for her eccentric style, including having a poodle as a bridesmaid at her wedding.
Standing by Harris After Conviction
Following Harris' arrest in 2013 and his conviction in 2014 on 12 counts of indecent assault against underage girls, Hughes stood by her husband. She attended every day of his trial alongside their daughter. Harris was sentenced to just under six years in prison but was released in 2017. He died from neck cancer at age 93 in May 2023.
Health Decline and Death
Hughes suffered from vascular dementia and the fragility of old age. In 2014, singer Vince Hill said: "Alwen is very poorly - I don't know if she will survive his prison term. She’s quite fragile. She suffers from arthritis and she’s had hip replacements and God knows what." She died after a stroke in summer 2024, just over a year after her husband.
Legacy and Documentary
Prime Video's documentary Rolf Harris: Primetime Predator explores how Harris hid his abuse for decades. The two-part series examines his public persona and 2013 arrest. Harris denied all charges but was convicted in 2014.
