Rod Stewart Heartbroken Over Clive Davis Death Aged 94

Singer Rod Stewart has been left heartbroken following the death of his close friend and legendary music executive Clive Davis, who passed away at the age of 94. Davis, the force behind J Records, died peacefully from age-related illness surrounded by his family in New York, according to a statement from his long-time spokesperson Aliza Rabinoff issued to Rolling Stone.

Stewart Pays Tribute on Instagram

Stewart, 81, took to Instagram to share a photograph of himself and Davis smiling together while holding a plaque commemorating his album The Great American Songbook, Volume II. In the caption, he wrote: "Lost for words! A day I've been dreading! A giant of a man in the music business. I owe Clive so much."

He continued: "The force behind J Records, he was the only one who believed a rock singer could sing the standards with conviction. Other labels rejected the idea, and so The Great American Songbook was born, selling close to 40 million copies." Stewart added: "We had some wonderful, unforgettable times together, but for now, Mr. Davis, it's goodbye, my dear friend."

Fans and supporters quickly flooded the comments section with messages of condolence. One wrote: "What sad news! My deepest condolences! Rest in peace Mr. Davis Clive, you were and always will be memorable! May God comfort your family, relatives and friends." Another said: "He is a huge loss to the industry! Prayers for you, & all of his loved ones!"

Davis's Legacy in Music

Clive Davis founded J Records in 2000, which became the home for major artists including Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne, Alicia Keys, Kesha, Maroon 5, and Leona Lewis. In a 2014 interview with the Daily Express, Davis reflected on his decades-long career. "Of all the artists I've worked with, Whitney was one of the best - and I've been very fortunate in that respect. My years with Aretha Franklin have been very special, as were the years making records with Dionne Warwick," he said.

He also highlighted working with Janis Joplin, the first artist he ever signed, as well as Patti Smith and Alicia Keys. Davis noted: "I also love the fact that Barry Manilow - who has never been the darling of the critics - has outlasted all the criticism."

Impact on the Music Industry

Davis's influence extended across multiple decades, shaping the careers of countless artists. His belief in Stewart's ability to perform the Great American Songbook led to one of the most successful album series of Stewart's career, selling nearly 40 million copies worldwide. Stewart's tribute underscores the profound impact Davis had on his life and the music industry as a whole.
