Robbie Williams has responded after a moment during a World Cup broadcast was labeled 'deeply unprofessional.' The 52-year-old singer performed at the closing ceremony but also appeared on German TV channel Magenta Sport, where he accidentally spat a small white object onto his microphone. He picked it up, held it, then rubbed his head, causing the object to stick to his forehead.
Williams explains the object
In a social media video filmed from bed, Williams apologized, saying: 'I'd just like to apologise for the object that fell on to the microphone yesterday. I was deeply unprofessional, and people worried about me.' He then revealed it was a mint, sticking out his tongue to show two circular mints, and added: 'But it's OK. Because I had several more.' The video ended with him laughing.
Captioning the Instagram post, he wrote: 'Just woke up and feeling…. Mint x.' Williams has previously spoken about struggles with mental illness, obesity, self-esteem, alcoholism, and substance abuse.
World Cup closing ceremony and half-time show
Williams performed alongside Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and Italian singer Laura Pausini at the closing ceremony Sunday night. The final between Argentina and Spain also featured the first World Cup half-time show, an 11-minute spectacle with stars including Madonna, Shakira, BTS, and Justin Bieber. FIFA extended the half-time interval from 15 to over 27 minutes.
Wayne Rooney's blunt review
Former England forward Wayne Rooney, working as a BBC pundit, gave a candid assessment: 'I’ll be honest, mine was when it finished. I like a lot of them artists but I thought it was crap. It just didn’t get me going and I wanted the football to come back on. I like Burna Boy, I like Bieber, I like Shakira, but that was too flat.'
