Richard Gadd and Claire Danes Discuss Body Transformations and Acting Challenges

Richard Gadd and Claire Danes have opened up about their dramatic physical transformations for their latest roles, in a conversation for Variety and CNN's Actors on Actors series. Gadd, known for the hit series 'Baby Reindeer,' bulked up to play the muscular antagonist Ruben in 'Half Man,' while Danes took on the role of a grieving mother in 'The Beast in Me.'

Danes praised Gadd's transformation, noting that he 'raised' her own famous guttural sob from 'Romeo + Juliet.' Gadd recalled writing an essay on that very scene in school, highlighting the impact of Danes' performance. Both actors reflected on the challenges of embodying intense emotions, with Danes describing the surprise of discovering her response during filming.

Gadd, who also wrote and showran 'Half Man,' discussed the difficulty of acting in his own work. 'You have to have a split focus,' he said, explaining that he often watches himself from a bird's-eye view to assess the performance. Danes, who is now producing more, compared the process to 'throwing a dinner party.'

The actors also touched on the thematic link between 'Baby Reindeer' and 'Half Man,' with Danes noting that Gadd plays 'flip sides of the same character'—first a victim, then an aggressor. Gadd admitted he initially planned to stay behind the camera for 'Half Man,' but was persuaded by co-star Jamie Bell and the producers to take on the role.
