Richard E Grant has been banished from The Celebrity Traitors after he accidentally revealed he was a traitor. He received votes from the majority of the contestants, including from both of his fellow traitors, Maya Jama and James Acaster.
As Grant stood in front of his fellow celebrities to reveal his identity, he said: “I am… an unfaithful traitor.” Speaking to the camera, he added: “I have been annihilated. I have managed to checkmate myself, which, as far as I’m aware, has never been done.”
Historic banishment
The other celebrities all cheered as he left and host Claudia Winkleman told the group: “Players, this has never happened before. Your first try and you got one.” His fellow traitor Maya Jama said after his banishment: “Richard, you messed it up, but you didn’t take me with you. So see you on the outside, my love.”
Grant came under intense suspicion at the roundtable after he slipped up and said he was a traitor mere moments after Winkleman chose him and Jama as the first traitors of the series. However, viewers were left not knowing who had been banished from the castle.
Reactions from fellow celebrities
Former Coronation Street actress Julie Hesmondhalgh told Grant she would vote for him. The actor also faced scepticism from actress Miranda Hart and mathematician Hannah Fry, who both noted a change in his demeanour after Winkleman selected the traitors. However, comedian Joanne McNally had defended the actor, believing him saying he was a traitor was simply a joke.
The Celebrity Traitors continues at 8pm on Friday on BBC One.
