Sir Richard Branson has shared the devastating news that his wife of fifty years, Joan, has passed away. The Virgin Group founder revealed she died "quickly and painlessly" while he was by her side.
A Final Lunch Together
In an emotional tribute posted on Wednesday, 26th November 2025, Branson described the poignant final moments with his wife. The couple found themselves unexpectedly reunited in hospital after both suffering separate injuries.
"I’d come off my bike in India and hurt my shoulder," Branson wrote. "Joan was recovering from her own back injury in hospital in England. In the way life sometimes surprises you, I found myself moved to a room just down the corridor from her."
The billionaire entrepreneur described how they laughed about the situation, feeling like "love-struck teenagers delighted to find each other again." They shared a "lovely lunch" together before tragedy struck.
A Life Lived Fully
Branson paid moving tribute to his wife's character, describing how she "lived so fully and joyfully, always thinking of others, always lifting everyone else up." He expressed gratitude that they had been so happy during her final months.
"To see her so happy in those last months is something we will treasure forever," the 75-year-old shared. The couple's children, Holly and Sam, are with their father as the family mourns.
Fifty Incredible Years
Branson acknowledged that "life will never be the same without her" but reflected on their five decades together. He described "fifty incredible years of memories – years filled with tears and laughter, kindness, and a love that shaped our family more than words could ever capture."
