A trailer reaction from the reviewer known as Eccy Reviews has led some horror fans to declare the upcoming Resident Evil reboot the “scariest film of 2026”. The film, directed by Zach Cregger and co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten, is the second reboot of the Resident Evil series, itself based on Capcom's video game franchise.
Trailer Reaction Sparks Excitement
In a video posted online, Eccy Reviews watched the trailer and described it as “so creepy”. At points he covered his mouth with his hands and his eyes widened. The trailer showed what appears to be the main character using an old-fashioned phone in a stranger's house, followed by someone running towards the house as another phone rang. The footage also featured limbs protruding from unexpected places and blood splattering across a street, all set to the sound of a ringing phone.
“I am so ready, I cannot wait for this film,” Eccy Reviews said at the end of the trailer. The film was made for IMAX, promising an immersive experience.
Fan Reactions Mixed
In the comments, one viewer asked: “Does this have anything to do with the Resident Evil franchise?” Another responded that it takes place during Resident Evil 2 and 3 “from a completely new perspective”, though they noted it looked a little “too supernatural” for their taste. Some fans criticised the film for straying too far from the source material, with one comment reading: “Resident evil zombies don't sprint (unless crimson heads), they certainly don't hang off door frames, etc. It looks good as a horror film, but as a Resident Evil film no.”
Others were more positive. One wrote: “Now this looks good!!! Can’t wait!” Another added: “Was just thinking they need to make a new one and here we are... Buzzing.” A more sceptical comment predicted: “I love this director, I’m pretty sure it will be a GREAT movie. But probably a 1/10 Resident Evil movie, haha.”
The film is slated for release in mid-September.
