A "special" kitten that captured the hearts of people across the country has died less than a week after it was born. The kitten, named Gemini, made headlines after she was born with two noses and two mouths.
A stray cat gave birth to Gemini on a Welsh street and rescuer Shelley Jones, 45, said she could barely believe what she was seeing when she noticed one of the eight kittens had two noses and two fully functioning mouths. Shelley said: "I have never in my life seen anything like it. I was quite shocked."
Rare Congenital Disorder
Gemini had a rare congenital disorder called diprosopus, also described as craniofacial duplication. Janus cats, as they are typically known, are very rare and are named after the mythological Roman god who is traditionally depicted with two faces.
The kitten was looked after at rescue centre PurrfectlyFeral in Llangedwyn, Powys. On Tuesday, they said she had died peacefully "wrapped in love until the very end".
Rescue Centre's Heartbreaking Statement
"We always knew that Gemini's life was likely to be incredibly short. Babies born with this rare condition very rarely survive for long, most being stillborn so every moment we had with her was a gift. Although our hearts are shattered, we take comfort in knowing that she did not suffer during her time on earth," the rescue centre said.
"She knew only warmth, comfort, gentle hands, full tummies, and unconditional love. Despite every ounce of love, care, and hope that surrounded her, some little souls are simply too precious for this world. She slipped away peacefully, wrapped in love until the very end."
Legacy of a Tiny Life
The kitten was named Gemini, owing to the twin symbolism associated with the star sign. PurrfectlyFeral said that although the kitten's death is "heartbreaking", comfort can be taken.
"As heartbreaking as this is, we truly believe Gemini's life was not in vain. In her short time here, she helped shine a light on what PurrfectlyFeral stands for. Her story reached thousands of people and gave us the opportunity to talk about the importance of neutering, responsible pet ownership, and why rescues like ours exist. If even one cat is neutered because of Gemini's story, or one person chooses to support rescue instead of irresponsible breeding, then her tiny life will have created a legacy far greater than we ever imagined."
