Karate Kid star Ralph Macchio has sparked disbelief on social media as fans discovered his real age. "I need to sit down for a moment" was one fan's reaction as he celebrated his 65th birthday. The Karate Kid favourite's youthful appearance had others insisting the news couldn't be true – with one even saying he "still looks 12."
A Milestone Birthday for the Karate Kid
The actor, born on November 4, 1961, celebrated the milestone this week. Great TV marked the occasion by broadcasting The Karate Kid Part III on his birthday. Macchio shot to fame as bullied teenager Daniel LaRusso in the 1984 hit The Karate Kid.
The film followed Daniel's move from New Jersey to California with his mum, where he found an unlikely mentor in his apartment block's handyman, Mr Miyagi, played by Pat Morita. The film became an instant 80s favourite, spawning sequels, a spin-off and, decades later, the hugely popular series Cobra Kai.
Fans React to His Ageless Appearance
On a Facebook birthday tribute, one fan wrote: "He never ages". Another said on Instagram: "Ralph Macchio is 65. I need to sit down for a moment." Other reactions included "My heart just skipped several beats" and "This can't be true."
Macchio's youthful looks have long been a talking point. During a previous appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss turning 60, the host asked: "Do people lose their minds when they find out your age?" The actor replied: "Lose their minds? No, maybe a little surprised."
From Teenager to Ageless Icon
Macchio was 27 when he played the 17-year-old Daniel, prompting one supporter to call him "easily the most convincing teenager played by an adult ever." The Karate Kid Part II, released in 1986, took Daniel and Mr Miyagi to Okinawa, Japan, where the karate master confronted his troubled past. The Karate Kid Part III followed in 1989, pitting Daniel against ruthless millionaire Terry Silver.
Silver teamed up with Cobra Kai instructor John Kreese to seek revenge on Daniel and his teacher. Both villains later returned in Netflix's Cobra Kai series. Despite flopping at the time, the third film has found a new generation of fans more than three decades later.
Kimmel continued: "Because you look almost exactly the same as you did... do you mind saying how old you are?" Macchio revealed he was 60, prompting cheers and applause from the audience. The presenter noted an "audible gasp" from some audience members, while Macchio jokingly called himself "the man-child freak." Under a YouTube video of the interview, one fan wrote: "If a 60 year old Ralph Macchio told me he was 40 years old, I'd believe him." Another joked: "He finally reached the age of 30." A further admirer said: "No doubt he won the genetic lottery when it comes to the ageing process."
Great TV's marketing director Kate Gartland said: "Our Great viewers love a classic, and this is an excellent way to celebrate the seemingly ageless Ralph Macchio turning 65 – happy birthday Ralph."
