Ralph Macchio celebrated his 65th birthday this week, and fans of The Karate Kid star refused to believe his age, with one writing, "This can't be true." Born on 4 November 1961, Macchio's birthday was marked by Great TV with a screening of The Karate Kid Part III, in which he played teenage Daniel LaRusso despite being 27 at the time.
A Career Built on a Teenage Role
Macchio rose to fame playing the bullied teenager in the 1984 box office hit The Karate Kid. The film followed the New Jersey youngster's move with his mother to California, where he found an unexpected mentor in his apartment building's handyman, Mr Miyagi, played by Pat Morita.
The film became an immediate 1980s classic, spawning two sequels, a spin-off and, many years later, the hugely popular series Cobra Kai. The Karate Kid Part II arrived in 1986, taking Daniel and Mr Miyagi to Okinawa, Japan, where the martial arts teacher confronted his difficult past.
Fans React to His Ageless Look
The Karate Kid Part III followed in 1989, pitting Daniel against ruthless millionaire Terry Silver, who teamed up with Cobra Kai sensei John Kreese to seek revenge against the teenager and his mentor. Silver and Kreese later featured in Netflix's Cobra Kai series.
More than 30 years on, the film — considered a box office disappointment at the time — has attracted a new generation of admirers. Macchio's portrayal of the 17-year-old Daniel prompted one fan to describe him as "easily the most convincing teenager played by an adult ever".
Great TV's marketing director Kate Gartland said when the film aired this week: "Our Great viewers love a classic, and this is an excellent way to celebrate the seemingly ageless Ralph Macchio turning 65 – happy birthday Ralph."
On Facebook, one fan wrote on a birthday tribute post: "He never ages", while another remarked on Instagram: "Ralph Macchio is 65. I need to sit down for a moment." One fan commented: "My heart just skipped several beats," while another responded to the revelation of his age with: "This can't be true". A further fan declared the star "still looks 12".
Surprising Interviewers for Decades
Macchio's youthful looks have also surprised interviewers throughout his decades-long career. During a previous appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss turning 60, the host asked: "Do people lose their minds when they find out your age?" The star replied: "Lose their minds? No, maybe a little surprised."
Kimmel continued: "Because you look almost exactly the same as you did... do you mind saying how old you are?" Macchio revealed he was 60, prompting cheers and applause from the audience. The host highlighted the "audible gasp" from some audience members, while Macchio jokingly described himself as "the man-child freak".
A clip was shared on YouTube, with one viewer commenting: "If a 60 year old Ralph Macchio told me he was 40 years old, I'd believe him." Another agreed: "He finally reached the age of 30," while a further comment read: "He was a teenager for about 20 years so it's no wonder he looks like he is just entering middle age at 60." The viewer added: "This guy is blessed with as close as a person can get to the fountain of youth. No doubt he won the genetic lottery when it comes to the ageing process."
