Rainford Supper Bar, a Chinese takeaway on Church Road in Rainford, has closed its doors for the final time after 40 years of operation. The business, run by the Sung family, shut earlier this month as the owners retired, prompting an outpouring of tributes from customers and the local parish council.
Farewell message from the Sung family
In a note left on the door, the Sung family announced the closure and thanked the community. The message read: "To Our Valued Customers, after 40 incredible years, our family has made the difficult decision to close our doors from Monday 27th July 2026."
The family added: "This business has been at the heart of our family's life for the past 40 years. It has been a place filled with hard work, laughter, unforgettable memories, and friendships that we will always treasure."
They explained that the owners' health prompted the decision: "While this decision has not been an easy one, their health has made it clear that it's time for them to slow down, rest, and focus on themselves after 40 years of putting everyone else first. They have truly earned this next chapter."
Parish council and customer tributes
Rainford Parish Council described the closure as "the end of an era," stating: "After an incredible 40 years of serving the people of Rainford, Rainford Supper Bar has closed its doors for the final time. For generations of local families, it has been much more than just a chippy. It's been the place for Friday night tea, post-football suppers, quick lunches, family treats and late-night chips."
Customers shared their own memories. Gill An Ian Slater said: "Happy retirement to you all. Well-deserved rest now. Not just a chippy, our children have grown up together and now have children of their own. Always friendly and smiles when you go in. Best Chinese takeaway we've ever had, even better than some Chinese restaurants we've tried."
Marie Roberts wrote: "Happy retirement. I've been coming to you since I was in my twenties, now I'm in my sixties! Will be missed so much." Nicki Parr added: "My Thursday nights after finishing my shift at Springwoods won't be the same. Have a wonderful retirement, you guys. You've earned it."
Legacy of four decades
Rainford Supper Bar first opened in 1986. The Sung family's farewell note concluded: "To every customer who has walked through our doors, ordered a meal or supported us over the years- thank you. Your kindness, loyalty, and friendship have meant more to our family than words can ever express. You have been a part of our lives, and we will forever be grateful."
