Prince George is celebrating his 13th birthday today, and his parents have continued the tradition of marking the occasion with a new portrait. The image shows George in a relaxed open shirt and dark suit, taken at Kensington Palace after Trooping the Colour last month. It was shared by his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Birthday portrait tradition
Each year, the birthday of the future King is marked with an updated portrait, as is done for William and Kate's other children, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Kate herself takes some of the pictures. This year's photo marks George's official entry into his teenage years, just weeks before he starts at Eton College.
Growing royal presence
In recent years, George has made more appearances at royal events. Last month, he joined his mother Kate for a visit to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire to celebrate Armed Forces Day. George has become a fan favourite, seen waving to the crowd on the Mall for Trooping the Colour in June, stoically watching the RAF flypast and stifling a sneeze until the end of the national anthem.
