A plus-size singleton has criticised men who only match with her on dating apps to comment on her weight. Libby Rose Martin, a size 18-20 from Sandwich, Kent, has been using Hinge since March 2025 to find love.
The 22-year-old fashion designer says men have matched with her just to make remarks about her body. One user commented on a photo asking for 'bulking tips'. When she responded, he said she 'can sure take in calories' and called himself a 'hero' trying to 'motivate' her.
Response to offensive messages
Libby decided to reply to educate him rather than block him. He then wrote that her reply was 'nearly as big as you' and that he only respects women 'who deserve it'. Libby shared the exchange on TikTok with the caption 'POV: You're plus-sized on a dating app' and the Sabrina Carpenter song Manchild in the background.
She reported the account to Hinge, but the app did not treat it as bullying or harassment and took no action. Libby said: 'I was quite taken aback, I can't imagine the audacity you'd have to say that to someone you don't even know.'
Dating challenges for plus-size people
Libby has battled a binge-eating disorder and says dating is harder for plus-sized singles. 'Dating for everyone looks different but especially for plus-sized (people) it's so much harder,' she said. 'I've had so many people commenting on my body, I get so sick of it.'
She has also been fetishised and experienced 'pretty privilege' where her thinner friends get more attention. Despite this, Libby says she won't change and wants to remind women that such behaviour 'says a lot more about them than it does about you'.
She added: 'There's plenty more fish in the sea and everyone's deserving of love no matter what they look like.' Hinge has been contacted for comment.
