Susanna Reid has revealed her former Good Morning Britain co-host Piers Morgan turned down her offer to visit him in hospital as he recovers from major surgery.
An Unexpected Hospital Stay
The 60-year-old broadcaster stunned his social media followers by sharing a picture from a hospital bed on Monday, 19 January 2026. He announced he had suffered a badly fractured femur after tripping on a small step in a London hotel restaurant, an injury so severe it required a full hip replacement.
Piers explained he would need to use crutches for mobility for several weeks and faces a significant recovery period, with no long-haul travel for 12 weeks. He quipped that his new year was off to a "cracking start", jokingly adding, "I blame Donald Trump," in a nod to their long-standing friendship that began when Piers won Trump's Celebrity Apprentice in 2008.
'I Was Rebuffed,' Says Reid
Discussing the incident on Good Morning Britain alongside Kate Garraway and Ed Balls, Susanna Reid gave viewers an update on her former colleague's condition. She confirmed he was "recovering well" but disclosed her offer of support had been politely refused.
"I did offer to turn up with grapes, but he says he has enough to open a vineyard, so I was rebuffed," Susanna remarked during the broadcast. She described the day as "blue Monday", labelling it "the most miserable day of the year", and added, "Not a great morning for our good friend Piers Morgan."
She summarised the unfortunate chain of events for viewers: "There was a restaurant involved and a stumble, and a whole new hip. So get well soon, Piers."
From Co-Hosts to Separate Paths
The pair fronted ITV's flagship morning show together until Piers Morgan's explosive departure in 2021, which followed the controversy over his comments about Meghan Markle. Last year, Piers reflected on his five years on the programme during a BBC Breakfast appearance, admitting he "hated" the early starts.
"It's like having permanent jet-lag," he said. "I did it for five years... but it is brutal. Hats off to you guys because it is a brutal thing to do morning television, people don't realise!" He described the exhausting cycle of adrenaline-fuelled live broadcasting followed by a midday crash.
As Piers Morgan begins his recovery, expected to last several days in hospital followed by weeks on crutches, it seems he is facing this challenge with characteristic bluntness – even if it means declining a well-meaning visit from an old friend.
