Photos of the day: autumn, protests and Hurricane Rachel

The Guardian’s picture editors have selected photographs from around the world for Friday, including autumnal scenes, worldwide protests, and Hurricane Rachel strengthening off Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Protests and detentions

In New Delhi, India, police officers detained a woman during a protest demanding the resignation of the country’s chief election commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. The demonstration was called by the gen Z-led Cockroach movement, which in July forced the education minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign after weeks of protests calling for education reforms.

In Lyon, France, young people held a sign that says ‘stop budget cuts’ during a nationwide protest by high-school students over long hours, teacher shortages and decaying facilities. Dozens of schools have been damaged and nearly 3,000 teenagers have been detained since the start of the tensions. In Strasbourg, students kicked back teargas canisters as they carried out a blockade of the city’s university. French media reports say more than 560 schools and educational establishments have been disrupted by the unrest.

In Santiago, Chile, a water cannon was fired towards students protesting against budget cuts to the education and welfare system proposed by José Antonio Kast, the country’s new far-right president. In Madrid, Spain, protesters gathered outside the Spanish parliament calling for housing reform after the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, who was forcibly removed from the apartment where she had lived for the last 71 years.

Weather and nature

In Les Brenets, Switzerland, a giant ‘Help’ was written on the grass-covered bed of what was Lac des Brenets, part of the Doubs River. The river dried up in July because of a combination of factors, including geological fissures that drain water underground, below-average rainfall and repeated heatwaves.

In San Blas, Mexico, waves crashed along Los Cocos beach as Hurricane Rachel strengthened into a category 3 system off the country’s Pacific coast. Northern Mexico is still recovering from Hurricane Polo, with the unusually active Pacific hurricane season being attributed to El Niño.

In London, UK, a stag was seen in the mist during the annual rutting season in Richmond Park. The national nature reserve is home to more than 630 red and fallow deer. In Llanrwst, UK, a Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) was a blaze of autumnal colours at the Tu Hwnt l’r Bont tea rooms.

Culture and events

In Seoul, South Korea, Tom Cruise met fans on the red carpet at the premiere of his movie Digger. The film by the Oscar-winning Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu has received mixed reviews, with some critics describing it as a ‘love it or hate it’ movie.

In Shexiang, China, an aerial view showed the land fingerprint concert held during the National Day celebrations at the ancient town in south-west Guizhou province. In New York, US, people arrived at the annual Diner en Blanc, a large-scale picnic that brings together foodies, culture enthusiasts and fashionistas. This year’s theme was Parisian belle époque.

In Ceuta, Spain, a young man dived into the strait of Gibraltar. Thousands of people, most of them young Moroccan men, have been living in makeshift settlements in the autonomous city on the north African coast since a mass arrival at the end of July. In Lelystad, Netherlands, a replica of the Batavia, an early 17th-century Dutch merchant ship, was transported to its new home on the grounds of Museum Batavialand. The original vessel was shipwrecked off what eventually became known as Western Australia in 1629.

Politics and other scenes

In Sepang, Malaysia, Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad was in action during the free practice session for the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix. The race is being held in Malaysia because of the conflict in the Middle East.

In Mexico City, Mexico, Santa Muerte devotees visited the altar on Alfarería Street in the Tepito neighbourhood of the Mexican capital to pay homage to the Niña Blanca deity. In Naucalpan, Mexico, members of the country’s national guard helped its smallest recruit, Comando, to prepare for a training session. The 13-month-old chihuahua is being trained for search-and-rescue missions and to help build a friendlier image of the security force.
