Phil Spencer, the presenter known for Channel 4's Location, Location, Location, has described the "terrifying" reality of homelessness. The 56-year-old, who has fronted the property show since 2000 and Love It or List It since 2008, has been a supporter of the homelessness charity St Mungo's since 1996.
A long-standing commitment to St Mungo's
Before becoming a household name, Spencer began supporting the charity, which he described as "the first organisation I supported on behalf of the business." Speaking to Hampshire Life, he explained his motivation: "We were helping people at the top of the housing ladder, and I thought, 'Well, perhaps we should put a bit of our fees toward helping people at the bottom'."
Back in 1996, St Mungo's was a small organisation that helped 21 people a night. That number is now closer to 200.
Addressing the issue of homelessness
Spencer highlighted the importance of having a home, saying: "A roof over your head is the most important thing, where you rest and recover. The thought of not having that is terrifying."
He also touched on how quickly homelessness can occur, adding: "Three things go wrong in a month, and you can be in real trouble. Most people don't have a couple of months' savings. There's trauma, mental health, poverty, bad luck. It's frighteningly easy to slip through the cracks."
Recognition for charitable work
Spencer has been a patron of St Mungo's since 2010, and his work has taken him to places such as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. He received an MBE for charitable services, recognised for his role as a patron of the charity.
Reflecting on the honour, he told the Press Association: "I'm hugely honoured and humbled. I mean, it's a hell of a thing. It's not something that I'd ever expected or even thought about. So it's a huge honour." He added: "It's all very kind of sudden and a bit of a shock and a surprise. So it's quite overwhelming, it's not quite overwhelming, it's very overwhelming. I'm completely blown away."
St Mungo's is a non-profit organisation that supports those who are homeless and campaigns for change. Over the years, Spencer has volunteered on various projects, events and fundraising activities. Emma Haddad, chief executive of St Mungo's, praised him for showing "incredible passion and dedication."
