Dame Penelope Keith, best known for her role as the snobbish suburban housewife Margo Leadbetter in the BBC sitcom The Good Life, has died at the age of 86. Her family confirmed she "died peacefully whilst living with cancer at her home in Surrey", according to BBC News. The actress also starred as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in To the Manor Born and had a career spanning from the late 1950s, including work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and an Olivier Award.
The Good Life and Margo Leadbetter
The Good Life first aired on the BBC in 1975 and ran for four series until 1978. It followed Tom Good (Richard Briars) and his wife Barbara (Felicity Kendal) as they abandoned city life to become self-sufficient in their Surbiton home, growing crops and livestock in their garden. Their neighbours, Margo (Keith) and Jerry Leadbetter (Paul Eddington), were initially horrified by the lifestyle change.
Interestingly, Margo and Jerry were only intended as minor characters but became integral to the show. Over the series, the two couples grew close despite their differing lifestyles. Margo, though snooty and a social climber, had a soft centre and was kinder than her exterior suggested.
Keith's Reflection on Margo's Popularity
In a 1985 interview with Sir Terry Wogan on the BBC, Keith reflected on why Margo became so popular despite starting as a minor role. "I don't know, she had some great lines," Keith said, referencing a moment when Margo told a bureaucrat she was "the silent majority." "I think that just went home to everybody; suddenly, she became a hero. Someone's challenging bureaucracy," she explained.
When asked if audiences could accept her in other roles, Keith said: "Yes, I think they do. I've done a lot of performances on television of classic plays like [Noel] Coward... People now say, 'Penelope Keith, actress, performer.' I don't think they think I'm Audrey or Margo. The gentlemen of the press would like to put me in the box of Audrey or Margo, but I think people accept me as an actress."
Legacy and Streaming
The Good Life remains a beloved classic and is available for streaming on BBC iPlayer. Keith's portrayal of Margo continues to be celebrated, cementing her status as a national treasure.
