Paris Hilton has defended her decision to dress her two-year-old daughter as a teacup for Halloween after facing criticism online. The 45-year-old socialite was accused of being a 'narcissist' for choosing to dress as Princess Belle while her children took on supporting roles in the family's Beauty and the Beast-themed photoshoot.
Hilton wore a yellow ballgown as Belle, while her husband Carter Reum dressed as the Beast with a furry mask and blue suit. Their son Phoenix, three, dressed as Lumière the candelabra, and daughter London, two, appeared as Chip the chipped teacup.
Backlash over spotlight
The family Halloween moment sparked debate on social media, with some accusing Hilton of stealing her children's thunder. One Instagram user wrote: 'Stealing spotlight from kids is next level narcissistic.' Another asked: 'When do your kids get to be the main character?' A third commented: 'Why not let your daughter be Belle? Attention has to be on her! Poor little girl!'
Some suggested the adults should have taken the supporting roles, with one commenter writing: 'Cute but maybe the kids should have been belle and beast and the adults the side dishes I mean it is a kids holiday…'
Hilton's explanation
Hilton responded to the criticism by explaining that the costume choice came from her daughter. 'Beauty and the Beast is one of their favorite movies,' she said. 'London said she wanted to dress up as Chip. She said it was her favorite character in the movie.'
Many of Hilton's followers defended her, with one commenting: 'Why is everyone so pressed in the comments? This is clearly just a Halloween photoshoot Paris does them literally every year.' Another wrote: 'this is the only rendition of beauty and the beast i need this halloween this wins'.
While concerns about celebrities using children for social media content remain, the criticism that a little girl should have wanted to be a princess rather than a teacup has been widely questioned.
