BBC viewers were left astonished on Thursday evening (October 8) when Hollywood stars John Cena and Jessica Biel appeared as guests on The One Show. Hosted by JB Gill and Roman Kemp, the episode saw the pair discuss their upcoming action thriller, Matchbox The Movie.
Hollywood stars on the guest line-up
Cena plays spy Sean Walker, whose return to his hometown leads him to reunite with childhood friends, including Biel's character Aimee. However, the reunion takes a dangerous turn when Sean is abducted by a group searching for a nuclear weapon. The CIA believes Sean and his friends are in possession of the weapon, forcing the group to fight to clear their names.
While the film's premise sounds intriguing, viewers at home were more focused on the surprise of seeing the Hollywood pair on the BBC programme. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one user posted: "John Cena on the b****y one show goodness."
Fans share their shock on social media
Another was equally gobsmacked, writing: "John Cena on the one show? ? ? ? had to do a double take because HUH???". While a third viewer commented: "Just having John Cena casually on the #OneShow."
Another person chimed in with: "John Cena and Jessica Biel on the One Show. What a programme." And someone else joined the conversation to add: "John Cena and Jessica Biel on #TheOneShow! I just completed my bingo card." Yet another BBC viewer joked: "#theoneshow I'm unfamiliar with John Cena."
Cena and Biel's backgrounds
Cena, 49, is well-versed in performing, having risen to prominence as a professional wrestler in 1999. He has subsequently moved into film and television, appearing in productions ranging from Netflix comedy Little Brother to critically praised superhero series Peacemaker.
Biel, meanwhile, has been recognised on screen since the 1990s, notably starring in cult horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The 44 year old has received nominations for numerous prestigious accolades, including Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy honours.
Discussing the stunts
Discussing the bold stunts required for the new production, Cena acknowledged some initial reluctance. He said: "I'm jumping from all of these heights. I spent 23 years falling down in the WWE [but] I knew that a fall from three feet hurts."
"It's one of those things where I'm not really into chasing that sort of adrenaline, and normally movies are like 'No, that's for a professional.'" Nevertheless, the actor admitted he understood the demands of the role. "[The director] sent me a list of things he wanted me to do before he even started the movie. So I knew what I was signing up for," he said.
The One Show airs Monday to Friday at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
