Jermaine Jenas: Young Lads on £20k a Week with Range Rovers – Football Is About Money and Power

Jermaine Jenas has opened up about the harsh realities of modern football, revealing that young players who have not even played a match are earning £20,000 a week and driving Range Rovers. The former Tottenham and England midfielder, who retired at 32 after a persistent knee injury, said the game has become dominated by money and power.

Jenas, now a pundit for Match of the Day, recalled the moment he knew his playing career was over. While rehabilitating a cruciate ligament injury at Queens Park Rangers, he felt a searing pain in his knee while using a weights machine. Scans showed cracks in his kneecap, and he realised it was time to call it a day.

The official retirement came unexpectedly while Jenas was in a BBC Radio 4 studio, sitting next to Chancellor George Osborne. Despite trying to avoid the topic, the presenter pressed him, and he announced his decision live on air. 'I didn't think I wanted it like that,' he said, 'but looking back it was nice to get some recognition.'

Jenas, the youngest-ever regular pundit on Match of the Day, is now carving out a new career in broadcasting. He aims to bridge the gap between fans and players, offering analysis from a player's perspective. 'Not everything is a disgrace, not every chance is easy,' he said. 'The players need a voice.'

Reflecting on the state of football, Jenas criticised the culture of young players earning huge sums without proving themselves. 'Young lads who don't even play are on £20k a week with Range Rovers,' he said. 'Football is about money and power.'
