Oasis fans desperate for news of a new tour from the reunited Manchester band have been sent into a frenzy after a BBC teaser showed the Oasis font and today's date. The black and white plate, with the date '23-06-26', was used in a promo on the BBC for tonight's England game at the World Cup.
Teaser Ignites Speculation
But Oasis fans have taken it to mean something else altogether, as rumours reach fever pitch that an announcement from reunited brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher could soon be on its way. The band ruled the world last year with their epic Oasis Live 25 reunion tour, which sold out everywhere and smashed all expectations, leaving fans begging for more dates. Despite all sorts of rumours of dates for the past year, they have remained completely silent on the topic of a new tour.
When football fans saw the Oasis logo beam out from the TV on Monday night during the World Cup coverage, it made plenty stop and do a double take. It drew comparisons to the way they originally announced the reunion tour, when dates were also flashed up at gigs in the iconic Oasis font.
Wonderwall Moment Goes Viral
The logo appeared in the midst of a BBC video replay showing the England team after their 4-2 victory over Croatia applauding England fans and joining in as everyone sings Oasis anthem Wonderwall. England captain Harry Kane is seen mouthing the lyrics: 'I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now.' The screen then cuts away to show today's date in the Oasis font. While it appears to have been intended as a promotion of tonight's England game against Ghana at 9pm, fans rushed to social media to share their theories.
Sharing the logo on X, Aston wrote: 'THEY SHOWED THIS AT HALF TIME ON THE BBC??????????? @liamgallagherspeak to me.' MessyJessy added: 'GUYS ITS REAL IM GOING TO PASS OUT THIS HAS TO MEAN AN ANNOUNCEMENT.' Brian Squidman added: 'Did anyone else just see that @oasis teaser with tomorrow’s date on @BBCOne??' Lewis shared the video as he watched the moment which made him stop in his tracks, saying: 'Wait, what?'
Fans Divided Over Meaning
Cath said: 'trying so hard to tell myself it’s just a football ad but if they drop an Oasis teaser mid-tournament I will actually lose my mind.' Some mused if it was a teaser for the upcoming Oasis documentary, due to premiere on September 11. But many tried to keep it real and point to the fact it was advertising the football game. Fan Becca wrote: 'guys i don’t think there’ll be any announcement, they just used the oasis logo for the date of england’s game because the wonderwall moment from the last game went viral.' Totallyretro87 said: 'Its just a promo for the England game, the BBC are trying to get it on the Wonderwall thing, as you were.' Joe added: 'Pretty sure it was them advertising the England game today (they were using Oasis for the build up). But still, the BBC know what they're doing.'
We have asked BBC sport for comment about the teaser and are awaiting a reply. The England v Ghana game will be screened live on the BBC on Tuesday, June 23, with kick off at 9pm. The Match of the Day Live special, hosted by Gabby Logan, will start the build-up from 8pm on BBC One.
