Novak Djokovic made a special request for a wedding invitation after a couple got engaged during his opening match at Wimbledon on Centre Court. The proposal, described as a 'high-risk' strategy by commentators, occurred as Djokovic faced Wu Yibing on the first day of the tournament.
Engagement interrupts play
As Djokovic and Wu Yibing took a break after the first set, cheers erupted from one corner of the arena. BBC presenter Clare Balding was initially unaware of the cause, but Djokovic was seen making a heart shape with his hands as play was about to resume. The tennis legend, bidding for a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title, then turned to the couple and said: 'I want an invitation to the wedding!'
BBC commentator Andre Cotter and pundit John McEnroe then realised a proposal had taken place. Cameras captured the newly-engaged couple, who appeared to grant Djokovic's wish for a wedding invite before celebrating with a kiss.
Commentators react
McEnroe, a three-time Wimbledon champion and seven-time Grand Slam winner, said: 'Novak has just said he wants an invitation to the wedding! Apparently this lady was just asked if she would marry this gentleman. It's quite a moment for these two!'
Cotter added: 'Alright, concentrate on the tennis, everyone! That's a high-risk strategy, isn't it? Asking that question on Centre Court at Wimbledon…' McEnroe then speculated: 'He probably mentioned it beforehand… he probably said, "if by some chance I decided to do this, what would you say?" just to make sure.'
