Noel Gallagher Fires Back at BRIT Awards Critics Over Songwriter Prize
Noel Gallagher has launched a fiery defence against criticism surrounding his upcoming BRIT Award win, boldly asserting his right to the trophy and issuing a pugnacious challenge to any detractors. The legendary Oasis guitarist, who will receive the Songwriter of the Year award later this month, did not mince words when addressing the controversy during a recent radio interview.
Controversial Selection Sparks Defiant Response
The 58-year-old musician acknowledged the surprise surrounding his selection for the prestigious songwriting prize, particularly given that he hasn't released new material in two years. "I haven't written a song for two years. I'm not sure how I've got away with that one, but I'll take it," Gallagher remarked with characteristic bluntness during his appearance on TalkSport.
When host Andy Goldstein pointed out that some were questioning the validity of his win without recent songwriting output, Gallagher offered a combative retort. "Well, I think the BRITs is all based on record sales, and I'm not sure there was another single songwriter that sold... I mean, we sold a million records last year. Didn't even get off the couch and I'm not sure there's a songwriter that can match that," he declared.
Red Carpet Confrontation Challenge Issued
The musician then escalated his defence into a direct challenge, inviting critics to settle their disagreements in person at the awards ceremony. "But you know, if anybody's got a problem with it, meet me there. We'll have it out on the red carpet," Gallagher stated defiantly.
He specifically targeted what he called "wet wipes songwriting teams," adding: "If any of those wet wipes songwriting teams, all 11 of them, want to write a song between the lot of them, want to have it out on the red carpet, I'm there."
Manchester Homecoming for Historic BRIT Awards
Gallagher will accept his award in Manchester at the Co-op Live arena on February 28th, just three months after Oasis completed their epic 41-date comeback tour. The ceremony marks a significant milestone as the first time in nearly 50 years that the BRIT Awards will be held outside London.
Reflecting on the timing and location, Gallagher offered a more pragmatic perspective: "I'm in the studio now, so I'd better do something out soon. If I am honest I think they just were desperate to get someone from Oasis up there cos it is in Manchester."
Family Matters and Football Focus
When questioned about whether his brother and former bandmate Liam would be attending the ceremony with him, Gallagher revealed they were focused on more pressing sporting matters. "...we're just organising tickets for the Carabao Cup final today, but no, I haven't spoke to him about that, no," he explained.
The conversation naturally turned to football, with the devoted Manchester City fan sharing his predictions. Despite his allegiance, Gallagher acknowledged Arsenal as favourites for the Premier League title and likely Carabao Cup final winners when the two sides meet in March, though he expressed hope for a City victory on the day.
A Legacy of Songwriting Recognition
This latest honour adds to Gallagher's considerable collection of songwriting awards, which includes the prestigious Outstanding Song Collection award he received at the 2013 Ivor Novello Awards. He follows in the footsteps of previous Songwriter of the Year recipients including Ed Sheeran, Kid Harpoon, RAYE and Charli XCX.
The BRIT Awards ceremony will be broadcast live from Manchester's Co-op Live on Saturday, February 28th, exclusively on ITV and ITVX, with comedian Jack Whitehall returning to host the prestigious event.
