BBC presenter Nina Warhurst has shared an emotional post about her “difficult week” at work, days after viewers expressed concern over her appearance on air. The 45-year-old newsreader faced a wave of worried messages after appearing on BBC News At One last week with noticeable swelling on her left eyelid.
Health Concerns Addressed
Warhurst quickly reassured fans via Instagram, explaining that she was not in any “pain or discomfort.” She thanked viewers for their concern and noted that her pharmacist was helping, adding that her left eye simply needed a few days off from makeup.
Emotional Reflection on Distressing Stories
Shortly after, the presenter posted a heartbreaking message reflecting on the emotional toll of covering tragic news, particularly the harrowing case of toddler Preston Davey. The teacher who murdered the infant received a life sentence, while his partner was jailed for 25 years. Warhurst wrote: “It's been a difficult week at work. The stories affecting children have weighed heavy on all of us in the office.”
She continued: “I'm having a gentle day with my little one, and we will go and say a prayer later for the ones who didn't get the start in life that every single child deserves. Weeks like this I am proud of the teams at the BBC for listening to the unlistenable in court, allowing families broken hearts to be seen, and their voices to be heard. Our journalists work hard to get it right, and inevitably sometimes it comes home. Children who suffer should never be forgotten.”
Outpouring of Support
The post drew an outpouring of support from colleagues and fans. Stacey Dooley commented: “I can't even get past the first paragraphs without crying. It's incomprehensible. Sending love.” One supporter added: “Stories like this must really play on your mind. Please make sure you take care of yourself Nina.” Another wrote: “These stories are so distressing to hear and when you’re a deep empath they hit harder,” while someone else said: “I totally agree with you - the BBC do an amazing job.”
Previous On-Air Concern
Earlier, Warhurst had sparked concern over the appearance of her left eye during a broadcast. One viewer asked on X: “Nina. Is your left eye okay??” while another wrote: “@NinaWarhurst hoping your eye is ok?” A third questioned: “#bbcnewsatone gosh what's wrong with one of her eyes she should get that checked asap get well soon.”
Career Background
Warhurst joined BBC Breakfast in 2018 as a business and consumer presenter before becoming a regular news anchor. In May 2024, she began presenting the BBC News at One and was appointed the programme's main presenter the following year, succeeding Anna Foster. Announcing the move, she reflected on her journey from BBC Breakfast, writing: “I'll be hanging up the high-viz and hairnet for a wee while as I join the BBC's News at One. The second photo was almost exactly seven years ago. I was heavily pregnant, very nervous, and unbelievably excited to be offered a few shifts on the national broadcast treasure that is @bbcbreakfast ... @stephlunch took time to show me the ropes and help me feel at home.”
She added: “The job was made permanent as we came out of a lockdown and began looking around and wondering how we might pick up the pieces to heal and live again. It's been a privilege to help support our audiences through this tumultuous time. I am always amazed by those who invite us in to share their stories. When I was a teenager hoping to work in journalism, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine there'd be all these opportunities half a mile from my Salford home. Our London colleagues built a gem of a lunchtime programme, and I can't wait to work with our amazing team as we take it forward. Ps - I'll still be popping up on the red sofa - if only to continue torturing Roger with my stories of air frying and washing lines.”
