Tom Hiddleston has teased an "exciting" update for The Night Manager season three, which is in development at the BBC. The star spoke out ahead of filming, eight years after the drama first premiered and following its second series comeback in January.
Hiddleston Hints at Jonathan Pine's Future
"I can tell you it's coming along," Hiddleston told RadioTimes.com. "It's one of the most profound and significant pieces of work in my acting life. I'm so grateful to The Ink Factory for including me in the journey of generating the material now as we imagine how to develop the story further."
He acknowledged Pine is among his favourite roles, noting conversations about series three "are very alive right now." The actor said they are "very connected to the conversation about our lives right now and the direction of travel in the UK."
Season Two Cliffhanger
Adapted from John Le Carre's novels, The Night Manager stars Hiddleston as MI6 operative Jonathan Pine, who uncovers a conspiracy to undermine the nation. Season two saw Pine suffer a devastating defeat after discovering his adversary Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie) was still alive. Pine was left bleeding, while Roper's son (Diego Calva) and Angela Burr (Olivia Colman) met their deaths.
"As we know from the ending of season 2, Jonathan Pine finds himself in a tight spot... wait and see, it's exciting stuff," Hiddleston added.
Creator on Third Series
Show creator David Farr said: "Right now, I feel the deep weight of doom of stress about it because I'm the one who has to actually do the writing of the damn thing. It's a huge challenge. It'll be very exciting." He added: "And it won't take as long as the last one, I promise."
Farr said the third instalment will address season two's dark ending, which "was important to us all because the world is a tough place at the moment, and it didn't feel right not to reflect that." He added: "But of course, all of us want to see justice, redemption and we want to see something change, so I feel like season three, there is actually a deep emotional and moral imperative to honour that."
