Nigella Lawson's Life and the Sad Death of Husband John Diamond

Nigella Lawson has entered The Great British Bake Off tent as a new judge this year, replacing Dame Prue Leith on the Channel 4 series. The announcement came in January, with Nigella expressing her excitement at the time: "I'm uncharacteristically rather lost for words right now."

She added: "Of course it's daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith and Mary Berry before her, great dames both, but I'm also bubbling with excitement. The Great British Bake Off is more than a television programme, it's a National Treasure - and it's a huge honour to be entrusted with it. I'm just thrilled to be joining the team and all the new bakers to come, I wish the marvellous Prue all the best, and am giddily grateful for the opportunity!"

Nigella Lawson's Famous Husband

The new series began last month, with Nigella appearing in the tent for the first time alongside Paul Hollywood and hosts Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond. As the drama continues on Tuesday (October 6), some fans may not know that Nigella has faced her fair share of heartbreak.

Nigella first met journalist John Diamond in 1986, when they were both writing for The Sunday Times. They married in Venice in 1992, before welcoming a daughter called Cosima and a son called Bruno.

The family soon faced heartbreak when John was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1997 and died in March 2001 at the age of 47. A devastated Nigella wanted to keep busy after her husband's death, so took just two weeks to grieve before going back to work.

Grieving and Returning to Work

"I took a fortnight off. But I'm not a great believer in breaks," she told The Telegraph in May 2001. "I don't want to be rattling around inside my own head. I did feel I was spiralling into a Kathy Burke character and tried going out, but I prefer it here. Filming keeps me busy. It absorbs me."

She added: "Of course it is displacing certain thoughts but, in a way, I don't think grieving should be your full-time job. That seems a rather modern idea. To act as if you don't have a life is probably not sensible, especially when you have children."

Fan Reaction to Nigella's Judging Debut

Bake Off fans have been quick to share their praise after watching Nigella's judging debut. "Nigella is doing very well," one person wrote on X.

Another added: "Nigella Lawson has single handedly saved #GBBO. Nigella exudes knowledge but also warmth," while a third said: "Nigella on #GBBO was the best idea. We're loving this season."

Someone else commented on Instagram: "Having Nigella join the team was a brilliant move. She brings a fantastic energy to the show. Her love of food is just brilliant. For all of us who love our food and eat it with pure joy and gusto is so affirming. Thank you all."
