Nick Jonas has spoken publicly about the health struggles his daughter Malti Marie faced following her premature birth in 2022. The singer, who welcomed his first child with wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas via surrogate, detailed the traumatic experience during an appearance on Jay Shetty's podcast.
Jonas recalled receiving an unexpected call saying the baby was arriving earlier than the expected date in April. Malti Marie was born weighing just 1lb 11oz and was purple. Medical staff in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) resuscitated her and placed her on a ventilator.
Due to Covid-19 protocols, Jonas and Chopra Jonas spent long hours at the hospital. Their daughter received six blood transfusions over three months before being discharged. Jonas described the NICU as “both comforting and frightening” and said he could still recall the smell.
Chopra Jonas previously told British Vogue that she was in the operating room when Malti was born. She described seeing the baby smaller than her hand and marvelling at the intensive care nurses' skill in intubating her tiny body.
Jonas reflected on Malti's resilience, saying she seems to remember her early struggles and now embraces each day as a gift. The couple have kept their daughter's life largely private since her birth.
