Niall Horan has broken his silence after finding himself caught up in an unexpected social media storm. The former One Direction star was accused by some fans in Argentina of endorsing an offensive Instagram post after it appeared he had liked an upsetting football meme.
The post was titled '8 times Argentina were really nice guys during the World Cup final' and poked fun at the runner-up's behaviour during the tournament. It referenced several controversial moments involving Argentina's players, including Lionel Messi speaking to the referee and Nahuel Molina's challenge on an opponent. But it was the final slide in the post that sparked outrage amongst his followers.
Offensive image sparks backlash
The image read 'Las Malvinas son Españolas' - Meaning 'The Malvinas are Spanish' - A twist on the well-known slogan 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas'. The Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, remain a deeply sensitive issue between the UK and Argentina following the 1982 war.
Many fans expressed that they felt the image mocked a subject that carries huge national importance, and that by liking the post Niall had insulted them. One fan account even alleged that the singer "hates Argentinians" while another said he had disappointed his supporters in the country.
Fan statement and Horan's response
In a lengthy statement one follower said the post went far beyond football banter, they said: "Things stopped being harmless football banter the moment people started making up claims that we're racist." The account argued that jokes referencing the Malvinas crossed a line because they touched on a subject that has caused "immense pain" for generations of Argentinians. They added: "We can't ignore Niall's like, which has now gone viral. We don't care about football jokes or any frustration over the match itself, but we do care about the final image, where Spaniards mock our fight over the Malvinas."
Niall addressed the controversy on X and insisted he didn't mean to like the post. He wrote: "honest mistake . truly didn't even realise id liked the post and don't even remember seeing it. i have nothing but love for argentina and all my fans there."
