Blake Fielder-Civil Confronts Fresh Heartbreak as Ex-Girlfriend Sarah Aspin Dies
Blake Fielder-Civil, the former husband of late music icon Amy Winehouse, is grappling with another profound personal tragedy. His ex-girlfriend, Sarah Aspin, was found dead on Monday, a devastating event that comes exactly fifteen years after Winehouse's own death from alcohol poisoning in 2011.
A Tumultuous Past and Haunting Legacy
Fielder-Civil's relationship with Amy Winehouse was famously turbulent, influencing some of her most poignant and raw love songs. The couple married in 2007 and divorced in 2009 after a marriage marred by multiple arrests, infidelities, and shared struggles with addiction. Blake, a former drug addict, has previously expressed deep remorse over his role in Winehouse's life, stating he would have acted differently had he foreseen the tragic outcome.
"If I had known how it was going to [end up], I would have been more careful about the things I was doing and who I was doing them with," he has said, reflecting on the singer's death.
Sobriety and a New Chapter Cut Short
In recent years, Blake Fielder-Civil appeared to be turning a page on his troubled past. He achieved sobriety following a near-fatal overdose in 2012, after which he was placed in a medically-induced coma. By April 2024, he publicly confirmed he had been "clean for years." He also built a family, having two children, son Jack and daughter Lola, with Sarah Aspin, whom he met in rehabilitation.
Aspin reportedly once told Amy Winehouse to "keep her hands off" Blake, and later declared "He is mine" when news of their pregnancy emerged. Their children are said to have inspired Blake to pursue a more stable and responsible lifestyle, a stark contrast to his earlier years.
The Latest Devastating Loss
The discovery of Sarah Aspin's death represents a cruel blow for Fielder-Civil, who has not yet publicly commented on the loss. Her daughter, Melody-Rose Hampshire, expressed her grief online, writing: "No words at all. Love you so mum. May you rest in eternal peace my beautiful mum. Doesn’t seem real."
This tragedy strikes as Blake seemed to be building a quieter life. As of 2025, he was reportedly engaged to Bay Wright, a private individual with whom he lives in Leeds, away from the media spotlight that followed his previous relationships.
Accountability and Fractured Relationships
Two years ago, in September 2023, Blake Fielder-Civil openly admitted a degree of responsibility for Amy Winehouse's death, particularly for introducing her to heroin. "I’ve needed to stop carrying that cross on my own. I’ve carried that burden myself for over 10 years," he confessed, acknowledging "huge mistakes."
His relationship with Winehouse's family remains fractured. In the BBC documentary Reclaiming Amy, her parents Mitch and Janice described the relationship as "extremely caustic, hopeless and destructive." Mitch Winehouse once referred to Blake as the "biggest low-life scumbag that God ever put breath into." While not on speaking terms, Blake has suggested openness to mending fences, noting Amy had wanted him to talk with her father.
Amy Winehouse was found dead at her Camden flat on August 23, 2011. A subsequent inquest concluded she died from alcohol poisoning, with a blood alcohol level more than five times the legal driving limit.
