Netflix has announced a new Bridgerton spin-off series centred on family matriarch Lady Violet. The show will chronicle her early life and tell the story of her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, similar to the previous spin-off Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
Production team and cast
Shonda Rhimes will produce and write the series alongside Nicholas Nardini, with Tom Verica serving as director. Lady Violet, played by Ruth Gemmell, is the Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton. She was married to Edmund Bridgerton and is the mother of the eight siblings.
The character has appeared in every season of the Netflix series so far and was also played by Connie Jenkins-Greig as a young woman. It has not been confirmed if Jenkins-Greig will reprise the role for the spin-off.
Series background and recent seasons
Bridgerton, produced by Rhimes’s Shondaland, has been a ratings hit for Netflix. Set during the Regency era and based on Julia Quinn’s book series, it follows the Bridgerton family as they navigate London’s high society in the early 19th century.
The most recent season centred on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and his romance with Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha). Series three focused on the relationship between Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington, now Bridgerton, (Nicola Coughlan) in a season that saw a steamy carriage scene nominated for a Bafta award.
