A 2022 BBC Breakfast segment featuring Naga Munchetty has resurfaced online, with viewers comparing the awkward exchange to Steve Coogan's character Alan Partridge. The clip comes as Munchetty announced her departure from the programme after 17 years.
Ice cream segment turns sour
Munchetty was presenting alongside co-host Charlie Stayt when business correspondent Hannah Miller went live from an ice cream factory. After tasting samples, Miller told the hosts: 'I bet you wish you were here now.'
Munchetty responded bluntly: 'I don’t like ice cream, Hannah.' She also said she did not like brownies, which were used in one of the flavours Miller was demonstrating.
'I won’t be bringing brownies into the office then,' Miller replied, to which Munchetty added: 'Don’t let me deny the rest of the office.'
Munchetty then wrapped up the segment: 'I’m glad you’re enjoying the ice cream, certainly needed in this weather.' Back in the studio, Stayt told her: 'I think you rather brought the tone down.' Munchetty laughed and said: 'Oh be quiet, come on! I apologise.'
Viewers compare to Alan Partridge
A Reddit post featuring the clip drew plenty of reactions. One user wrote: 'The clip lives rent free in my head... Munchetty's response seems so cringe, and with Stayt's reaction it almost feels like an outtake/parody.'
Another comment said: 'Alan Partridge would be proud.' Others echoed: 'Accidental Partridge' and 'The whole thing was like an Alan Partridge scene.' One viewer remarked: 'What a car crash! The way her eyes averted at the end in awkwardness is priceless.'
Munchetty announces BBC Breakfast exit
The resurfaced clip comes as Naga Munchetty confirmed she is leaving BBC Breakfast after 17 years to host BBC Radio 5 Live’s breakfast programme. She said: 'It has been a privilege to be part of the BBC Breakfast TV team for the past 17 years, working alongside an incredibly talented and hard-working group of journalists who are not only outstanding colleagues but also great friends.'
