Four years after Girls Aloud's dramatic split, Nadine Coyle has reunited with hit-makers Xenomania for her new solo single, Go to Work. The singer has opened up about the band's final days, revealing that the decision to end the group was made via a tweet on the last night of their 2013 reunion tour.
Coyle, 32, said she was in hair and makeup before the final show at Liverpool's Echo Arena when she was told the other members wanted to split. 'It was shocking. We'd signed a new deal and recorded what was basically another new album,' she said. She confronted Sarah Harding, her closest ally in the band, who reportedly said, 'Oh fuck it, I can't be arsed with it, I fucking hate everybody.'
The split announcement was made on Twitter as the stage was being dismantled. Coyle said she saw the draft and demanded her name be removed. She later posted her own tweet, saying she had no part in the decision and wanted to keep going. Aside from Harding, she has not spoken to the rest of the band since.
Coyle has now reunited with Xenomania's Brian Higgins and Miranda Cooper, the team behind Girls Aloud's biggest hits, including Biology and Love Machine. Her new single, Go to Work, marks a return to the distinctive pop sound that made the band famous. Higgins said he wanted to create 'very startling, very aggressive pop' to counter the 'Swedish R&B-lite sound' of the time.
Reflecting on the band's 2009 hiatus, Coyle said tensions were already high. 'One of the heads from our label came to a London show and none of the girls were really speaking to each other,' she recalled. She denied accusations from Cheryl Cole that she had caused the split by seeking a solo deal, insisting she had nothing set up for herself at the time.
