A mother has come under fire after giving her twin daughters the same first name, albeit with different pronunciations. The unusual naming choice, which saw the sisters called ‘Uh-Lah-Nuh’ and ‘Uh-Lay-Nuh’, caused significant confusion at their high school, according to a Reddit post.
The poster, who attended school with the twins, said teachers and pupils struggled to tell them apart. As a result, classmates began differentiating them by physical appearance, with one twin having a disability that left her with underdeveloped arms and requiring her to write using a pen in her mouth.
Online users were quick to criticise the parents, questioning how such a naming decision was legally permitted. One commenter warned of potential medical errors in emergencies when twins have near-identical names, while another noted that postal and credit checks could become problematic.
The debate comes amid other examples of similar twin names, such as Justine and Justina, which also drew scrutiny. Critics argued that even minor variations like ‘Alayna’ and ‘Alana’ would have been more distinguishable.
