Mum Faces Backlash Over Gender-Neutral Name Vivian for Son
Mum Faces Backlash Over Gender-Neutral Name Vivian

A new mother in the United States has spoken out about the backlash she received after revealing her intention to give her newborn son a gender-neutral name. The woman, who shared her dilemma on Reddit, said she was left "blindsided" by the negative responses.

Family Name Sparks Debate

The mother explained that she has always been drawn to unisex names and wanted to honor her family by using the name Vivian, which had been given to both her grandfather and her uncle. However, the fact that it was used for male relatives in the past did not sway online commentators, who overwhelmingly advised against the choice.

"I am thinking about passing the name onto my son because 1) I love my family so much and 2) it's a unisex name," she wrote. She asked Reddit users for their opinion, inquiring whether the name was "unique, modern and nice-sounding enough."

Reddit Users React

The responses were swift and critical. One user noted, "I've never met a boy or man named Vivian. The last time it ranked in the top 1,000 names was 1933. Though it may be unisex by definition, I think it's a stretch to call it unisex in practice. It doesn't mean you can't pick the name, but most likely there will be some confusion regarding gender that your son will have to deal with."

Another commenter agreed, stating, "It seems too feminine to me. I never even knew it was unisex." A third user pleaded, "Please don't name him Vivian. It's going to make life a lot harder on him, and he may resent you in the future."

Parental Concerns

Other parents chimed in, urging the mother to consider the potential social challenges her son might face. One mother advised, "Please don't name your son Vivian. Do not do that to him. You're going to love him more than anytime you've ever known, and it will break your heart as a mother to see your five-year-old come home crying because people made fun of his name."

A second commenter added, "It's giving Leslie, yes it's unisex but he will definitely be mocked, substitute teachers don't know preferred names in school."

Gender-Neutral Names on the Rise

According to parenting website The Bump, gender-neutral baby names are inclusive and offer flexibility. "Baby could be a Quinn, a River, or a Jude; the sky is the limit with the gorgeous array of options!" the site states. "These names are for the parent looking to give baby their own unique way through life while still giving them a name to fall back on for support, no matter who they discover themselves to be."

The Bump lists the top five unisex baby names of 2026 as Kai, Rowan, Noah, Asher, and James. Despite the popularity of gender-neutral names, the mother's experience highlights the ongoing debate and societal pressures surrounding naming conventions.
