Marks & Spencer has launched two new viral sweet sandwiches – a strawberry and cream version and a chocolate, strawberry and pistachio dessert sandwich. Food reviewer Eloise Head shared her thoughts on the treats, which have been inspired by Japanese convenience store desserts.
Strawberries and Creme Sandwich
The M&S website describes the sandwich as made with "the UK's sweetest Collection Red Diamond strawberries, grown exclusively by M&S Select Farmers" and layered with "a light whipped cream cheese between soft, sweetened bread." Eloise noted the bread was "very soft" and the overall taste was "very summery." However, she commented: "It's actually not as sweet as I thought it was gonna be because the cream cheese bit has a tang to it. I just wish the cream were a little bit sweeter. I wanted it to taste a little bit more like cake, to be honest." She gave it a 7/10 rating.
Chocolate, Strawberry and Pistachio Creme Sandwich
This new addition pairs "ripe, sweet British strawberries with smooth pistachio creme and a rich Fairtrade Belgian chocolate spread, layered in cocoa-enriched sweetened bread." Upon trying it, Eloise found it "heavy" and noted "something weird about it" initially. She confessed the chocolate spread "tastes quite dark" and she is not keen on dark chocolate. "Again, it's not quite as sweet as I would've liked it. The pistachio creme part, though, is really good. I'd prefer to taste more pistachio. The more I'm eating it, the more I'm liking it," she said. She awarded it an 8/10, preferring it over the original.
While Eloise enjoyed both sandwiches, she wishes M&S had increased the sweetness to make them feel more like a dessert or cake. Taste is subjective, and those without a sweet tooth may appreciate the lower sugar content.
