Mike Browning, the founding drummer of death metal band Morbid Angel, has died at the age of 62. His bandmates confirmed the news in a statement, describing him as a 'true pioneer' of the genre.
Band Statement and Tributes
'R.I.P Mike, thanks for helping make all this happen,' Morbid Angel said. 'Our condolences to his family & especially his daughter.' Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren called Browning 'a musical legend and truly the nicest guy.' 'I can't believe you're gone,' he added. 'Thank you for your music and for all the good chats.'
Founding of Morbid Angel
Browning co-founded Morbid Angel in 1983 with guitarist Trey Azagthoth, initially under the names Ice and Heretic. The band was among the first to feature guttural vocals, now a hallmark of death metal. Browning left after a falling out with Azagthoth in 1986, the same year their debut album Abominations of Desolation was recorded. That album, his only recording with the band, was not released until 1991.
Musical Legacy
Morbid Angel's first studio album, Altars of Madness (1989), is widely regarded as one of the most important death metal albums ever. After leaving, Browning played with several other metal bands, including Nocturnus, Acheron, and After Death. His later band Nocturnus AD released the album Unicursal in 2024 and performed at Swarm Fest that year.
Tributes from the Metal Community
Profound Lore Records hailed Browning as a 'death metal legend/visionary and sci-fi death metal godfather.' Guitarist Michael Amott recalled trading letters and tapes with Browning in the late 1980s, calling him 'a true DM legend.' Browning is survived by his daughter Bela, who thanked fans for their messages, calling him 'an amazing person and an even better father.'
