Mike Browning, the founding drummer of the legendary death metal band Morbid Angel, has died at the age of 62. His former bandmates paid an emotional tribute, calling him a "true pioneer." The announcement was made on social media, with the band stating: "R.I.P Mike, thanks for helping make all of this happen. Our condolences to his family & especially his daughter." No further details about his death have been released.
A Founding Member of Morbid Angel
Born in Florida, Browning was one of the founding members of Morbid Angel alongside guitarist Trey Azagthoth. He played drums on the band's debut album, Abominations of Desolation, recorded in 1986 but not officially released until 1991 because the band felt it did not meet their standards. Despite this, the album became a cult classic among death metal fans. Browning left the group after a clash with Azagthoth and went on to play on his own demo, Incubus, before joining the metal band Nocturnus.
Pioneering Work with Nocturnus
With Nocturnus, Browning gained recognition for drumming and singing on the album The Key, released in 1990. The record was praised for its pioneering use of keyboards and futuristic themes, earning him the title "sci-fi death metal godfather." His label, Profound Love, paid tribute: "RIP death metal legend/sci-fi death metal godfather Mike Browning of Nocturnus/Nocturnus AD. Journey beyond the gateway to the outer void! 'Before Christ – I ruled the land. After Death – I will rule once again.'"
Later Career and Legacy
After Nocturnus, Browning played with Acheron before forming Nocturnus AD in 1999, which disbanded in 2002 and later reformed in 2013. Following his death, former guitarist Vincent Crowley is the only surviving original member. The band's last album, Unicursal, was released on May 17, 2024. Tributes poured in from the metal community. Dirk Verbeuren, drummer for Megadeth, said: "I can't believe you're gone. Thank you for your music and for all the good chats." Michael Amott of Arch Enemy and Spiritual Beggars added: "Damn, that's a shock. True DM legend. Still have the letters and tapes we traded in the late 80s, met him in FL in 1990 and he was very cool. R.I.P." The death metal band Possessed stated: "The heavy metal world has lost one of its true pioneers."
Impact on Death Metal
Browning was a driving force in the birth of Florida death metal. From his early work on Abominations of Desolation with Morbid Angel to the groundbreaking science fiction-infused death metal of The Key and Thresholds with Nocturnus, he helped shape a genre that continues to inspire musicians worldwide. One fan commented: "An absolute legend and a very friendly, humble and talkative person too. Which one of the 10/10 classics that he performed on should I listen to first in tribute?" Another wrote: "A visionary and inspiring artist. A profound loss. May you find THE KEY to eternal and peaceful rest." His daughter, Bela, responded to the label's tribute: "Thank you for this beautiful post. He was an amazing man and loved his work in music so very much." Browning is survived by his daughter.
