Molly-Mae Hague has revealed the unexpected inspiration behind the name of her newborn son, Midas Thomas Fury, in her post-birth return to YouTube. The 27-year-old former Love Island star and influencer explained that the name came from the 2011 sci-fi film Real Steel, not Greek mythology as many fans assumed.
Film Inspiration Over Greek Myth
In a 29-minute vlog, Molly-Mae addressed comments linking the name to King Midas of Greek mythology, who was granted the wish that everything he touched turned to gold. 'I saw a few comments being like: King Midas was a fool in Greek mythology. This is just so silly if she’s called her son this,' she recalled. 'I actually found the name from watching a film called Real Steel.'
Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as a boxer who teams up with his son to build a champion robot fighter. 'One of the robots in the film that was boxing was called Midas, and I heard the name and I thought… This was years ago… I was like: Wow, that’s a really cool, strong name. Midas? I’ve never heard of that before,' Molly-Mae said, laughing at herself.
Tommy Fury Loved the Name
The influencer said she mentioned the name to her partner, boxer Tommy Fury, who 'absolutely fell in love with it,' and thus their boy name was decided. However, Molly-Mae also acknowledged the positive connotation of the Greek myth: 'I believe the story is that everything he touches turns to gold and I do absolutely just love that saying.'
Recording on June 12, the day before Tommy’s fight against Eddie Hall, Molly-Mae revealed she designed a patch inside his shorts that read: 'Everything he touches turns to gold,' in honor of baby Midas. She clarified that, like her daughter Bambi, Midas is not necessarily named after the mythological figure.
Name Reveal at Fight
On June 13, Tommy Fury revealed his son’s name after walking out for his fight at Manchester’s AO Arena, with 'Midas' spelled out in gold lettering on his waistband. Molly-Mae watched ringside as Tommy defeated Eddie Hall on points.
