Mike Browning, 80s Death Metal Drummer, Dies at 62

Mike Browning, the pioneering drummer who co-founded the iconic death metal band Morbid Angel and later fronted the sci-fi metal act Nocturnus, has died at the age of 62. His death was confirmed by his current label, Profound Lore, on July 15, 2026, sparking an outpouring of tributes from across the heavy metal community.

Death Metal Pioneer and Morbid Angel Co-Founder

Browning was a founding member of Morbid Angel, formed in Tampa, Florida, in 1983 alongside guitarist Trey Azagthoth. The band became a cornerstone of the Florida death metal scene. Browning drummed on the band's intended debut album, Abominations of Desolation, recorded in 1986. However, due to a dispute with Azagthoth over the album's quality, the record was shelved until its eventual release in 1991. Browning left Morbid Angel later in 1986, making the album his only contribution to the band.

Post-Morbid Angel Career and Nocturnus

After leaving Morbid Angel, Browning joined the sci-fi-themed death metal band Nocturnus, contributing drums and vocals to their acclaimed 1990 album The Key. He later played with the black/death metal band Acheron. In 2013, he revived his sci-fi metal vision with Nocturnus AD, releasing albums such as Paradox (2019) and Unicursal (2023). The band's final performance took place in 2024.
