Catherine Zeta-Jones has voiced her support for husband Michael Douglas's decision to step back from acting, calling it a well-earned break after six decades in the industry. The 55-year-old actress, currently starring as Morticia Addams in Netflix's Wednesday, told The Times that while Douglas has earned the right to slow down, she considers retirement a 'flexible concept' for the Oscar-winning actor.
Douglas, 80, announced last month at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival that he has effectively been retired for three years, having not worked since 2022. 'I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set,' he said, adding that he has 'no real intentions of going back' unless a special project arises.
The couple, who married in 2000 and share a 25-year age gap, have faced scepticism about their relationship from the start. Zeta-Jones dismissed the criticism, telling The Sun that their 25th anniversary is 'something to celebrate' and that they ignore 'the crap that is written about us'. She emphasised their independence and similar personalities, noting they were born on the same day, 25 years apart.
Douglas and Zeta-Jones have two children together, Dylan, 25, and Carys, 22, as well as Douglas's son Cameron, 46, from his first marriage. The family moved from Bermuda to New York in 2009.
