Michael Byrne, the veteran actor known for roles in Coronation Street, Braveheart, and Harry Potter, has died at the age of 82, his family confirmed.
Career Spanning Six Decades
Byrne's career began on stage in the 1960s, where he performed alongside Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens in productions such as The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Trelawny of the Wells. He transitioned to film and television, amassing credits in over 60 productions.
His most notable film roles included Smythe, the English commanding officer in Mel Gibson's Braveheart (1995); Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989); and the powerful wizard Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010). He also appeared in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and alongside Sir Ian McKellen in Apt Pupil (1998).
Television and Stage Legacy
On television, Byrne was best known for playing Ted Page, the long-lost father of Gail Platt, on Coronation Street from 2008 to 2010. His character was written out in 2021. He also guest-starred in series including Casualty, A Touch of Frost, and Sharpe.
His final stage appearances came in Schiller's Mary Stuart in 2018 before he retired after a 60-year career.
Personal Life and Survivors
Byrne is survived by his former wife Carole, who cared for him in his later years, their two daughters Tara and Bryony, and three grandchildren: Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine.
According to a family statement, Byrne passed away peacefully. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
