Micah Richards jokes Lineker's 'embarrassing' over Kane record

Harry Kane equalled Gary Lineker's record of World Cup knockout goals for England with a penalty in the 3-2 win over Mexico, sparking a playful exchange between Micah Richards and Lineker on The Rest is Football podcast. Richards joked that Lineker's constant references to his own records were 'embarrassing'.

Kane's Record-Equalling Strike

Kane, 32, scored his sixth World Cup knockout goal on his 119th England appearance, bringing his total to 85 goals for his country. Lineker, 65, scored 48 goals in 80 caps. Kane had already broken Lineker's record to become England's all-time top World Cup scorer earlier in the tournament.

Podcast Banter

On the Netflix podcast, Lineker said: 'Harry Kane tonight equalled another record of mine... most knockout goals, he's now equalled six knockout goals. It took him two games longer [than me], but that's all right!' Richards responded: 'Seriously Gary, it's getting embarrassing now! Have a night off, will you?' He added: 'The Rest is Gary Lineker, just do your own pod and talk about yourself for the whole 40 minutes.'

Lineker hit back: 'I can't help having so many f***ing records, Micah! But they're all going, okay?' Richards then sang a chant synonymous with England fans, prompting Lineker to jokingly switch off the TV feed.

Match Details

England's last-16 tie at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico was delayed by an hour due to thunderstorms. Jude Bellingham scored twice in the first half, but Julian Quinones pulled one back. Jarell Quansah was sent off, but Kane's penalty made it 3-1. Mexico's Raul Jimenez scored from the spot after a VAR decision to reduce the deficit to 3-2, but England held on.

Kane told BBC Sport: 'It was a crazy game. We had to fight and we had to find something. I've just been singing, I can't really talk. The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.'

Kane is now one goal behind Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot. England face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
