Metallica shattered Welsh records with their M72 World Tour gig at Principality Stadium on June 28, drawing 76,000 fans and becoming the largest live music event ever staged in Wales. The concert marked the band's long-awaited debut at the venue, 30 years after their last Cardiff show in 1996.
Record-Breaking Attendance
The 76,000-strong crowd surpassed the previous record held by Ed Sheeran, who attracted 75,000 fans in 2022. U2 had previously held the record with 73,354 attendees during their 360° tour in 2009. The concert also set a new attendance record for Principality Stadium itself.
In-the-Round Production
The M72 World Tour transformed the stadium into an in-the-round experience, with the stage positioned at the heart of the venue, allowing fans to view the show from every angle. The band performed a two-hour-plus set featuring hits like Master of Puppets and Enter Sandman.
Community Engagement
Before the show, Metallica partnered with the Welsh Blood Service to encourage blood donations, aiming to 'give something meaningful back' to the communities they visit. They also attended the inaugural Blackbird Festival at Cardiff Castle and dined at a local restaurant.
