Mel Schilling's Final Words to Jamie Theakston Revealed

Married At First Sight Australia expert Mel Schilling has tragically passed away at the age of 54, following a courageous battle with colon cancer. Her husband, Gareth Brisbane, announced the devastating news on Instagram on March 24, just days after Mel revealed her cancer had become terminal.

Jamie Theakston Shares Heartbreaking Final Conversation

Heart Radio presenter Jamie Theakston, who himself faced a cancer diagnosis in 2024, has shared the poignant final words Mel Schilling said to him. Discussing the news with co-hosts Amanda Holden and Ashley Roberts, Jamie recalled their last exchange.

"You know the last thing she ever said to me? She said, 'You and me, we're survivors'. That was the last thing she ever said to me," Jamie revealed, his voice filled with emotion.

A Stoic and Brave Battle

Jamie described Mel's approach to her illness as "inspiring", noting she handled it with "such grace". He added, "She was so stoic and brave. We'll miss her." Amanda Holden expressed her shock at the rapid progression, saying, "I couldn't quite believe it, you hear the announcement that she knew it was coming but for it to happen within weeks is just so awful."

Mel Schilling had joined Jamie and Amanda in the Heart Radio studio in 2024 during a break from her chemotherapy cycle. At that time, she explained her treatment experience, noting that her specific type of chemotherapy for colon cancer didn't cause hair loss or sickness, but did result in side effects like tingling fingers and sensitivity to cold.

Mel Schilling's Cancer Journey

Mel Schilling was first diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023, undergoing surgery to remove a tumour described as the size of a lemon. Initially given the all-clear, the disease unfortunately returned and spread to her lungs and brain.

On March 12, just days before her death, Mel shared that her cancer was now terminal, admitting she didn't know "how long she had left". Her husband Gareth's announcement confirmed she had lost her battle with the disease.

Gareth Brisbane's Emotional Tribute

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Gareth Brisbane paid tribute to his wife of 15 years, describing her as "our wee Melsie" to their daughter Maddie and himself. He wrote about her incredible strength throughout two years of chemotherapy, noting she "never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy".

Gareth's statement continued, "To most of you, she was Mel Schilling - matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate." He concluded by expressing gratitude for their time together, writing, "I had 15 wonderful years with my soulmate, and it was the privilege of my life to be by her side."

Jamie Theakston's Own Cancer Experience

Jamie Theakston's connection to Mel Schilling's story is particularly poignant given his own cancer journey. The 55-year-old presenter revealed his diagnosis of stage one laryngeal cancer in September 2024, after listeners noticed changes in his voice.

Following surgery and a career break, Jamie confirmed he was "cancer-free" in January 2025, though he has since admitted to ongoing anxiety about his health. His shared experience with Mel created a special bond between them, making her final words about survival particularly meaningful.

The entertainment community has been flooded with condolences for Mel Schilling, remembering her not only as a television expert but as a courageous woman who faced her illness with remarkable dignity and strength until the very end.
