Mel C Reveals She Almost Got Kicked Out of Spice Girls After Telling Victoria Beckham to 'F*** Off' at BRIT Awards
Mel C Almost Kicked Out of Spice Girls Over Victoria Beckham Clash

Mel C has revealed she risked being kicked out of the Spice Girls after a confrontation with Victoria Beckham at the 1996 BRIT Awards, an incident she initially thought was trivial. The singer, whose real name is Melanie Jayne Chisholm, recounted the story on The Louis Theroux Podcast, saying she went into 'terror' when band manager Simon Fuller threatened to remove her from the group.

The Incident at the 1996 BRIT Awards

Mel C explained that the incident occurred at the BRIT Awards in February 1996, before the Spice Girls had released any music. The group was signed to Virgin Records and attending the event as industry newcomers. 'We were sitting on a table with Lenny Kravitz ... this was an amazing night for us,' she said. After a few glasses of champagne, while looking for their car, Mel C turned to Victoria Beckham and said, 'Oh, f*** off.'

She thought nothing of it at the time, but the next morning, she woke up to find bandmates Mel B and Geri Halliwell 'disgusted' with her behaviour. 'I didn't even have beer fear ... I just woke up going: “Oh, last night was fun”, where I had completely brushed off that situation,' she recalled.

Threat of Expulsion

Simon Fuller, the group's manager, called a meeting with Mel C and told her in no uncertain terms that if anything like that happened again, she would be removed from the band. 'That completely freaked me out, one, because I didn't realise I'd done anything that terribly bad, and two, because my actions may have led to me losing everything I'd ever wanted,' she said.

The Spice Girls are marking 30 years since the release of their debut single 'Wannabe' in July 2026. The track, released on July 8, 1996, spent seven consecutive weeks at number one in the UK and four weeks at the top in the US, launching a string of hits including 'Who Do You Think You Are', 'Stop', and 'Viva Forever'.

Reflection on the Moment

Mel C admitted she was in 'terror' because she thought she might lose everything she had dreamed of as a child. 'I thought it was very trivial as well,' she added, noting that at the time, nobody in the public knew who the Spice Girls were. The incident, however, served as a wake-up call for the singer, who has since become one of the most successful members of the group.
