Meghan Markle has been criticised by a royal expert who described her decision to post a photograph of her children at Princess Diana's former home as a 'vulgar act'.
Photo sparks backlash
The Duchess of Sussex shared an image on Instagram showing Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet walking through the grounds of Princess Diana's childhood residence, Althorp Estate. Archie was seen holding a bouquet of flowers, leading to speculation the siblings were visiting the late Princess of Wales at her resting place.
The photo prompted widespread online backlash, with many expressing disappointment. It has also been suggested that Prince William was angered by the post.
Royal expert's view
Maureen Callahan, a Daily Mail columnist known for her insights on the British Royal Family, wrote a blistering opinion piece. She proposed that Meghan may have posted the image as 'an act of defiance,' particularly since no photos were reportedly permitted during Harry and Meghan's meeting with King Charles earlier this month, according to the Express.
Callahan noted that Prince William and Princess Catherine have visited Diana's grave with their children but never made images public. 'William and Catherine are decent, serious people who understand that some things are sacred,' she wrote. 'Diana was buried on that island, at her family's private residence, precisely to keep her gravesite from becoming a circus, a tourist attraction, a commodity.'
Comparison to past incident
The columnist condemned the photo as 'vulgar' and 'callous,' drawing parallels to when Meghan posted clips of herself in a vehicle near where Princess Diana died, an incident that allegedly left William 'fuming.'
Harry's reported homesickness
This follows claims from a source that Harry is increasingly desperate for reconciliation, feeling 'estranged' from his family. 'I don't think [Harry's] ever wanted to be estranged from his family,' the source said. 'I think when he was madly in love with Meghan, he could be blind enough to choose her. Now things are different, and the veil is lifting.'
Last year, a close friend told the Standard that Harry was struggling with homesickness. 'Spike (his nickname among his old school friends) is seriously homesick. He's started reaching out to us more and more.' The friend added that the messages became more normal over time. 'Whenever anyone goes to America, they try to see him. It never seems to be with Meghan, though. We think he is beginning to pine for home.'
