Meghan Markle was mocked by fans after her latest £19,000 appearance in London was compared to that of a beloved Star Wars character. The Duchess of Sussex was pictured leaving Claridge’s Hotel in London on Wednesday, joined by Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. A video of the two enjoying dinner together had previously circulated online.
Outfit Details and Fan Reactions
Meghan was dressed casually in a cream top with white palazzo trousers and a loose camel coat. She paired the look with her beige and brown pointed loafers and a dark Chanel bag. She kept her hair in her signature low bun and appeared to be fresh-faced. The duchess’s look was reported to be worth around £19,000 ($25,000).
But fans were quick to compare her loose camel coat and white outfit to that of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the legendary Jedi Master from Star Wars. One user shared a photo of the duchess alongside Kenobi and said: “OM*G!!!!! Halloween showed up early—and Obi-Wan still wore it best.”
A second user added: “With all her Hollywood “connections” you would think she could get a top notch stylist….or at least a free personal shopper at Nordstrom.” A third one commented: “She HAS to be trolling us with these outfits.”
More Criticism and Context
A fourth one said: “Obi Wan wore it infinitely better.” A fifth one added: “OMG is she serious?! This is hilarious!” A sixth one commented: “While attempting to project royal gravitas alongside a global icon, the exaggerated pose and swallowed-up wardrobe transform what was meant to be a high-profile power moment into an overly staged, performative photo-op.”
Prince Harry’s wife, 45, and 29-year-old Malala have known each other for many years. Malala is a Pakistani female education activist and the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate in history. She first met Meghan during a virtual discussion on October 11, 2020, to mark the International Day of the Girl, a cause the duchess is hugely passionate about. In a Zoom chat streamed by the Malala Fund, the two women spoke about the systemic barriers that prevent millions of girls from accessing education.
It’s the latest of Meghan’s private appearances since moving back to the UK in the summer.
