Fans of Meghan Markle have “terrorised” a group of British priests following their reaction to the Duchess’ new £122 Advent calendar, with one vicar reportedly forced to lock down his social media account.
Priests criticise calendar
The group suggested Meghan may have missed the true meaning of the festive season after she released her luxury chocolate Advent calendar in an online launch.
According to the Daily Mail, Anglican priest and London university chaplain Reverend Daniel French made a suggestion that people should buy a £6 Christian Advent calendar instead. The option he suggested raises money for charity and comes with a booklet on the “meaning of Christmas”.
The reverend posted a picture of Meghan with her Advent calendar, writing: “For £5.99 you can pre-order a Christian Advent Calendar with Fairtrade chocolate from the Meaningful Chocolate Company. A donation is made to The Leprosy Mission.”
Abuse and account lockdown
One vicar who allegedly “politely criticised” the calendar has reportedly been “forced” to lock down his X account, reports the Daily Mail. He was reportedly called a “demon” and a “disgrace to the cloth” by Meghan’s supporters.
His colleague Father Chris Phillips, whose parish is in Benhilton, south-west London, posted in support of the priest on X. The so-called “Sussex Squad” called him “satan spawn” and “evil”. The Daily Mail reports he has been “terrorised” by “deranged trolls” leaving him no choice but to lock his social media account.
Calendar details and fan reaction
Meghan's new calendar is one of her latest releases but it is only available to fans in the US, despite her move back to the UK in August. The As Ever calendar includes chocolates finished with “Meghan's own flower sprinkles,” with flavours spanning strawberry, raspberry, blackberry and orange marmalade alongside Compartés's signature dark chocolate ganache truffle.
Following the reveal of the new As Ever calendar, fans are clearly excited, with many sharing their thoughts on X ahead of the release, with one adding, “It’s stunning!” Another person penned: “I am on this! Love that chocolate and the advent calendar, filled with chocolate, what a great concept!”
An email sent from As Ever to excited potential buyers shared that delivery would begin in November, “just in time” for the festive season. The email concluded with: “Some things are worth the wait.” Daily Express has contacted Reverend Daniel French and Father Chris Phillips for comment.
