Terry McDermott's family have issued a statement following the death of Newcastle United great Kevin Keegan. The duo, who saved Newcastle from relegation to Division Three in 1992 and led the Magpies to the brink of the Premier League title, shared a bond that transcended football.
McDermott Family Statement
In a statement released by McDermott's son Neale, the family said: "We are heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend, Kevin Keegan. Kevin was so much more than a teammate. He was a lifelong friend whose warmth, loyalty, humour and passion for football touched so many lives."
The statement continued: "The memories they shared, both on and off the pitch, will be treasured forever. Although Terry’s dementia means he is no longer able to express his feelings publicly, we know how much Kevin meant to him and how deeply this loss would have affected him."
McDermott, diagnosed with dementia in 2021, received frequent visits from Keegan on his final journeys to the North East for talk-ins in recent years.

A club statement read: "We are devastated to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan, one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club’s history. Kevin was more than a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters."

Legacy of Keegan and McDermott
Keegan and McDermott played together for Liverpool and Newcastle. When Keegan returned to manage Newcastle, McDermott was his first call. Together, they led Newcastle to the highest level, narrowly missing the Premier League title. The family's statement concluded: "Kevin was one of football’s true greats, but to Terry he was, above all, a cherished friend. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten."
